A Collection of Thesis Theme Reviews

February 15, 2009

While starting this blog I scoured through 100’s of themes and their reviews and finally decided upon Chris Pearson’s Thesis Theme. It was a choice that I haven’t regretted once and one that has streamlined my blogging experience ever since.

Four reasons to drop $87 on the premium theme:

The Support.
The support you receive as a Thesis user from other owners as well as Chris Pearson himself is unbelievable. Once you purchase Thesis you are given access to a forum full of knowledgeable users and moderators. It really is one of the most interactive forums I’ve joined. The moderators, including Chris and his sidekick KingdomGeek, are insanely smart and usually respond within a few hours to every post. Another valuable benefit of the forums is that it sends traffic to your site!

There’s also support on Twitter. @pearsonified and @kingdomgeek are available or you could just include #thesiswp and make use of Twitter’s hashtag feature. Like anything on Twitter, there’s a thin line between active and annoying so be kind and don’t bombard anyone with unwanted messages etc.

Customization within Wordpress’ Dashboard.
Each release of the Thesis Theme makes it easier and easier to be as dumb as a nail and still customize your site. In Thesis 1.4, you are given two option pages, Thesis Options and Design Options, that allow you to tweak your site from within Wordpress!

The Thesis Options page allows you to adjust the appearance of title tags, authors, dates, comments, and a number of other things on each page of your site. You can also change the syndication service and analytics tool to whatever you prefer within Wordpress itself.

The Design Option page allows you to have some fun with; font styles and sizes, column layouts and proportions, and image positioning and treatment. No other theme I’ve encountered allows you to update these features without actually changing the HTML/CSS coding of your site.

Two Files to Worry About
There comes a point in any bloggers career that it becomes necessary to dabble and tweak like a true geek with the coding of your site. Thesis makes this easy by allowing full control of the layout and styling of your entire blog in just two files, custom_functions.php and custom.css. You do need to learn a little bit about “hooks” but again the support group for Thesis makes this a cinch. Oh, and when a new release of the theme comes out upgrading is easy since you only need to backup these two files.

Search Engine Optimization
Blogging by nature is a popularity contest and the only way to make is to make sure that search engines like Googe, Yahoo, and MSN are on your side. There’s a lot of factors that go into a theme’s design to make it search engine friendly. Thesis comes built in with all these things and more so that you never have to worry about a thing. If you’re really adventurous, Thesis allows you to adjust the metadata, title tags, alt tags, and more from within Wordpress’ Dashboard.

Thesis theme allows you to focus on what is most important to any blogger, blogging. I highly recommend that you buy thesis and start blogging right away! If you don’t trust me, here are some other reviews and showcases of this fabulous theme by other Thesis users.

  • Rikin, thanks for the shoutout. The "No results found for..." made my day. :-)
  • I've actually bought Thesis and I can safely say that I am not all that impressed. Unless you know 'hooks' and CSS you it isn't all that easy to tweak. Fortunately I only bought the single version. Fortunately because I found a theme that beats Thesis hands down as far as ease of use. There is no need to know hooks or anything else to change almost any blog feature that one could want.
  • Hi Sire,

I ran into the same pitfalls with CSS and Hooks when I first started using Thesis. Overtime this gets better and with each update of Thesis the need to actually touch the code gets less and less.

I do agree though that Thesis does take a little geekery and that there are many blog themes out there that are easier to customize. Thesis theme though is ONE of the best themes because it evolves over time to open up new functionality not just aesthetics.
  • One of the best, yep I think I can live with that, because it is a good theme, just not right for me.
  • now, if you do thesis theme sucks search, your page comes first LOL ..
  • Haha - I told you Thesis has great SEO!
  • We're currently using the Thesis theme and are running into problems with Pluggins. The Theme seems to require some hacking, especially when customzing for pluggins (latest problem is with the Tan Tan noodles Flickr pluggin). We're actually considering ditching the theme because of this.
  • I've had a few issues with a couple of plugins since switching over to Thesis but it really depends. I've never tried the Tan Tan noodles one you mentioned but there are a number of flickr plugins/flickr widgets that you could probably try. Goodluck!
