The Problem With “Best Practices”

July 29, 2009

They only bring you up to par – but today par is not good enough. You need a birdie, dammit you need an eagle, and you can only dream of a hole in one.

This life moves too fast for yesterday’s best practices to apply today and pay off tomorrow. Ignore the white papers, look for the trends, and use your head.

  • Well said man - are you turning into Seth Godin? LOL - In all honesty, you have to break away from the norm and be innovative to see real success. Don't like the way a job is going? Don't blame the job and settle in to something you'll end up hating - redefine your role. Will this always be possible? No, but more often than not, your brilliant ideas could and should be brought to the table.
  • Oh man, was that too Godin-esque? I guess there are worse comparisons to be drawn and I really do hold Godin in high regards so I'll take that as a compliment.

I think much of the responsibility for the complete disregard and malaise that hovers over people attempting to climb the corporate ladder lies with the organizations themselves.

Things have changed so drastically in the past two years that much what plagues corporations today is being stuck in their ways. Treating all new workers as just necessary cogs in a very large wheel rather than as elements of growth and creativity.
  • Man I think you and I were separated at birth - I was thinking about this exact topic yesterday - you'll see a post coming soon centered around that theme of corporations stifling creativity. And you're right - the game has changed. Companies are OK with making lowball offers to people they know will take them (folks desperate for work) - but I think the tides are turning and I'll be happy when we return to the day that companies value the PEOPLE more than simply focusing on results.
